Frame Size or Frame Detail

Reading Your Frame Size

For frames that fit perfectly, first determine what frame size is best for you. The best place to start is with the measurements on a pair you already own. First, look for the three small numbers inside the temple of your glasses. Some may also refer to this section as the “arms” of your glasses. These three numbers are the frame measurements.

From left to right, these measurements appear in the following order:

  1. Lens width
  2. Bridge width (Nose)
  3. Arm length

Sometimes, a fourth number will be noted on the arm, which corresponds to the height of your lens. Keep in mind that all of these measurements are in millimeters.

Lens Width

This is the horizontal width of each lens at its widest point.

Bridge Width (Nose)

This is the distance between your two lenses. In short, the bridge width is the space where your frames fit your nose.

Arm Length

This is the length of the arm of each eyeglass from its end, including the elbow that rests on your ear.

Some useful tips for measuring your frame

Finding the Perfect Frame Width

Your perfect frame should be slightly wider than your face – no more than the width of the tip of your finger between your temple and your face. Wider is a sign that your frames are too wide.

Be Comfortable with Your Temple Length

The temple length is the measurement (in millimeters) of the arms of the frame. The temple should fit horizontally and uniformly along your face and fit comfortably along the outside of your ear.

Choosing the Right Height and Width of the Lens

Your eyes should be centered in your lenses. Frames that are too wide will make your eyes appear too close, while frames that are too narrow will distance your eyes.

Selecting the Perfect Bridge Width

The distance between the two lenses of a frame is called the bridge width. The bridge of your glasses should rest comfortably against your nose. If you have close-set eyes, the ideal bridge width is a lower number. If you have wide-set eyes, the ideal bridge width is a higher number.

Width includes lens and bridge widths in millimeters. Look inside the arm of the temple to find your frame measurements.
